Duties Of The Mayor
As the leading elected official of the City, the Mayor is empowered to approve or veto legislation, provide an annual budget for all city services, and have direct supervision of government administration for all citizens and businesses of the City.
The Mayor appoints and the City Council confirms the appointment of Laurel's citizens to serve on various City Boards, Commissions and Committees. These Committees and Commissions make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council that often result in legislation or improvements to our community. It is our citizens involvement in their local government that gives you a voice.
The City established its present form of government in 1870 when the First Mayor of Laurel was elected. The current Mayor of Laurel, the Honorable Craig A. Moe, was first sworn in as Mayor on March 25, 2002, and most recently re-elected and sworn in to his fourth term on November 9, 2015.
The Mayor is, and has always been, extremely interested in what his constituents are concerned about. Please let him know. Call 301-725-5300, extension 2124, or send an e-mail.
Laurel is a wonderful place to live and work; it has a proud tradition and was born out of a mill workers town. Please access our History Page if you are interested in learning more of the History of Laurel and of those who have served as officials since 1870.
